For what it's worth, I just picked up one of these, and finally was able to get my Apple
PowerBook (15" Ti, 667 MHz) to talk to a BX-24. Development system works just fine
on VPC 5 using either Win95 or WinMe.

(who now has some spare USB / Serial adapters that *didn't* work)

I had difficulties with several USB-serial adapters, but the one I use now works
perfectly! It's a Keyspan "High Speed USB Serial Adapter" model USA-19W. Note:
the older "USB PDA Adapter" I had (USA-19X) did NOT work.

In a separate, but related note I am succesfully using the FTDI FT232BM USB
interface chip with a BX24 project. I do not use it for programming the BX24, but
for BX24-to-Host communications. They work great. I bought the plug-in modules
made by GigaSystems (#USBMOD1). Check out:

http://www.saelig.com/giga.htm

Note that the FTDI chips & giga modules use TTL level signals so you can connect
them directly to the BX chip pins. Be sure to configure the BX for "non-inverted"
serial.

I have successfully used Rev 1 of the FTDI evaluation cable...

I'm confident that Rev 2 will also work.

If you need multiple USB-serial ports, ByteRunner has up to 8. Some
models are also FTDI based.

I have been successful with using a USB-2-Serial adaptor with the Basic
Stamp 2, but I have not had a chance to try it with the BX24 yet. I also,
have heard the same rumors that you can't use them with the BX24. I'll let
you know if I get mine working.
