Datasheet for LCD?? ->
http://www.edtc.com/edt/products/specs/162C0REF.pdf

Not the same part number but specs look the same.

Let the group know if you get the back light dimming working, I'm
buying a few of these tomorrow.

These are now on sale for $1.49 each.
http://sales.goldmine-elec.com/prodinfo.asp?prodid87

I got some of them and hooked one up for a test. It seems to work
fine except that the backlight is on all the time; even when I don't
have anything connected to pins 15 & 16. If I connect a variable
voltage source to the pins there is no observable effect with either
polarity.

The pinout and command set seem to be "standard". I used the
commands that I found at this site:
http://www.repairfaq.org/filipg/LINK/F_Tech_LCD.html

Here is a link to a picture of the LCD displaying characters:
http://www.kinzers.com/bluebird/parts/GR14023.jpg

The picture isn't as crisp as I would like - the characters are
sharper than it appears in the picture.

I received a flyer today from Electronic Goldmine (link below). In
it they show a parallel data, 16x2 backlit LCD for $2.49 each, item
number G14023. There is no datasheet available (EDT p/n EW162C1YMY)
but it is likely similar to EDT p/n EW162C0YMY a datasheet for which
may be found here:
http://www.edtc.com/EDT/Products/Specs/19.pdf

There is another "mystery" LCD priced at 3/$1.00, item number G2294.
