Hi, essentials release a code composer for msp430 with full compatibilty
with fet tools, you ca download it from T.I.
free version gives up to 8 Kb of code

this does for me is get a compiler capable of producing code up to 8K
instead of the IAR Kickstart approach which has a 4K limit (without
stepping up to the EW430-BL version). I do not have a target board
available yet so my question is this: Can you debug a target
with "Code Composer Essentials" and an MSP-FET430UIF? The confusing
part to me is that TI, who produces Code Composer, only seems to
refer to the IAR tools.

Yes. There may be a bit of configuration involved as the default
configuration for the CCE involves the parallel port.

I am new to the MSP430 family but very familiar with Code Composer

to debug our own board with an MSP430F1232 via an MSP-FET430UIF. What
