There are loads of ready built modules for data communications out there
in the market place. Depends what you need - distance, one way, half duplex, full duplex, speed, error correction, etc, etc, and of coarse price! These days you can go serial data, bluetooth, IEEE 802.11, etc, etc. The best thing about using a pre-built modules is that they are usually certified to meet some pretty stringent radio regulations. If you build your own from scratch then set aside a few $10,000's for testing and certification to international standards! Such devices appear in the Circuit Cellar magazine and many other hobby electronics magazines. They even had a recent article about using mobile phones to send bi-directional SMS messages between micros!
