Yes, there are dozens of choices out there. No point in doing the O.P.'s
homework when the answers are only a Google away.

For only 30 feet in a laboratory, consider flashing an IR LED. You will
learn a lot if you do it right. If you do it wrong you will also learn a
lot.

Hopefully Edgard isn't seriously recommending an RS-232 interface? Gross
overkill.

Bluetooth is also gross overkill, but throwing prebuilt modules together
might get one through the class assignment.

ZigBee is a good option. Many complete kits with internal AVR that one
might run one's application on the same CPU as managing the RF.

TinyOS is a free and smaller near-ZigBee. Supported by many vendors and
CPUs including AVR. http://www.tinyos.net/ "TinyOS is an open source,
BSD-licensed operating system designed for low-power wireless devices,
such as those used in sensor networks, ubiquitious computing, personal
area networks, smart buildings, and smart meters."

Hello

You may use the Ezurio BTM-402 Bluetooth module.
The interconnection with Atmel microcontroller is by RS-232 serial port and support AT commands.

Check newark.com or mouser.com

We need to transmit digital data over a short range( 30 feet ) at a data rate of 8K bits/sec . please suggest me a RF module satisfying these conditions and also can be interfaced to ATMEGA 8 easily

There are a lot of RF modules that can do that. A Zigbee module should be
fine.
