Yes, Philips spun off their semiconductor division.
(but not completely: they kept a 20% stake: that's probably why NXP still
proudly has in all its literature: "Founded by Philips")
Quite a popular thing to do, by the way.
LOTS of companies have spun off their semiconductor divisions:

Harris -> Intersil
Motorola -> Freescale
Rockwell International -> Conexant
Agilent -> Avago
Siemens -> Infineon
Lucent -> Agere

Not quite!

NXP is privately owned but Philips retains about 19.9% of the stock.
Also NXP is still using "Founded by Philips" slogan, but it is
getting smaller and smaller as time goes just like the NXP value.
