Although I love the Cosmic compiler because it's a very clever thing and not a bloated can of beans (SCNR), I don't like the IDE (prefer make and a good editor) and even less the ZAP debugger (and ZAP is too expensive). Regarding the BDM interface: if you look at the archives (maybe also of the HC05/08 list), you will find that there are very often problems with the parallel port interface. I never would use such a thing if there are alternatives. Stay with RS232 and USB to avoid trouble. If spending some money is not the problem, check iSYSTEMs winIDEA, there is a demo available, and iSYSTEM will give you a working system with hardware to test. You will find that it's very intuitive and powerful (and even a not so bad IDE, if you want to use it). The iC3000 is also compact and has USB and serial interface, optional ($) Ethernet. Maybe the iC3000 with winIDEA costs not much more than ZAP with P&E. A cheaper and really pretty alternative is John Hartman's NoICE software. Run it with Elektronikladen ComPOD12/PRO. I use NoICE for the HC08 (with Cosmic). Another thought: If you buy a Compiler from one supplier, and the complete debugger (HW and SW) from another, you have a standard interface between both (IEEE695 or ELF/DWARF). But there is no standard interface between the debugging software and hardware so you depend on support of both parties. Oliver -- Oliver Betz, Muenchen |
