Yes they are different.
The SAM7Xxxx is the never and better variant, so the switch Atmel did was in the
"right" direction :)
You you are going to reprogram the SAM7xxx often for experimentation then you
should really consider using flash programming through JTAG. For the SAM7Xxxx
SAM-BA is OK.
