The 'available now' has different meaning for Xilinx Marketing, namly
they claim availability as soon as first piece of silicon is scheduled
to leave Xilinx premises to any entity outside.

However parts are obtainable sure before they appear as stock
by digikey or others.

Since it is not catalogued at distribution, it is therefore not
"generally available", i.e. it is not in the hands of ordinary users.
Digi-Key et al typically show new parts in their catalog a few weeks
before they are actually in stock.

There were usenet threads back in May, apparently started by Orcad
insiders and joined by other Orcad favored users, that indicated the
parts werre out in sample and at early development sites. I was
wondering if any ordinary users like us were powered up yet.

If you can't buy it, then it is not available. Will locating a press
release stating "it's now available" rectify the situation that you are
unable to find it at any vendor?

The Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGAs show up in Xilinx's website, but not in any
of the distributors.
The development boards are promised "June 2006", and you can leave an
email address to be notified when they are truly available.
