Some of their fine-pitch connectors are also available pre-soldered onto
a flex PCB. This is much smaller then using 50 mil ribbon cable, or even 25 mil
ribbon cable. We have found these flex PCBs also a lot more robust for general
use than ribbon cable.

Checkout Samtec for connectors. They have a lot of interesting small pitch
stuff. And they will send out samples VERY fast.

A similar (more ways) Hirose connector is used for inter-board connections
on the tiny Gumstix PXA255 systems. One Gumstix user said he found them
difficult to solder, but his technique might have been wrong. I haven't
tried them yet as no-one has any stocks, and Hirose won't have any for a
couple of months, at least.

Check out the .5 pitch DF-12 series of connector from Hirose
Electronic Co. Ltd. - here's a typical example - Digikey part number
H2756-ND

I'm going to give this a try and build both connectors on a small
pcboard as Leon suggested earlier.

Hi,

you can check this adapter http://www.tetc.co.jp/sica/e_sica.htm
small and nice with 0.5 mm step

Best regards

Most of the cable will be 20-way, with the grounds. It's only the last
couple of inches that will be 8-way, if a suitable adapter is made.

Keeping the 20-pin connector is nice as it gives a ground wire between
the signal wires (ribbon cable). Check out this AMP connector
available at Digikey:

A3103-ND

You're right Leon, I think it is Harwin. There are two suppliers.
farnell only has the single row. My supplier gets them in double row too.

The 8-way Harwin M30-6100806 is available from Farnell (866118). I
think those are the connectors Al referred to previously. I'll order
a few next time I get some stuff from Farnell, although I have a
feeling I've got some somewhere that I ordered a long time ago. I'll
probably start using them myself.

I use a 1.25mm pitch SMD or through hole part from Molex. cvomes in
vertical or 90 degree, very compact, single or dual row, and around
$0.20 in bulk from Taiwan. Up to 20 connectors. They're so tiny and
cheap most of my boards get one. I posted the Farnell part number here a
few weeks ago. have a look, if they suit you I can find out where in
taiwan my contact gets them from
