You may want to look at NSCs LMX9830. I do not yet know it in great detail, but it does have some audio block inside. There is not much to implement as far as protocols go, the firmware on the part does that - one talks to it pretty much like to a modem, although the command set is quite different. I don't want to add the protocol stack to the embedded
controller, just need a ready-to-go "base station" module
with audio input and output.

Google turns up bluegiga's wt32.

Any other options suggested or experiences welcome !
