I believe it does connect to some serial monitors. There is a gnu-m68hc11
Yahoo group for GCC and related software; you might want to ask on there.

question:-
1.) does the gdb connect to the serial monitor on the chips?
2.) is it possible to do source level debugging with it, either in
text mode or using Insight?
