Yes , It would be a more strainght forward route but its costs license
fee.
I dont mind paying license fee , but I dont really know the
implications as I havn't bought IP for FPGA before.

Have you considered putting an ethernet MAC in the FPGA ? I believe
Xilinx has some Ethernet IP that connects to the microblaze.

I am about to start a designing a system using Spartan 3 FPGA running
microblaze and interface it with SMSC LAN91C111 using the Embedded
peripheral controller core provided by xilinx. Just before starting I
thought it worth checking if some one had any problems using such a
