ICM-20948 in MPU6050 / ICM IMU Family

The ICM-20948, manufactured by TDK InvenSense, is a high-performance 9-axis MotionTracking device designed to succeed the popular MPU-9250. It integrates a 3-axis gyroscope, a 3-axis accelerometer, and a 3-axis AK09916 magnetometer into a compact 3x3x1mm QFN package. Utilizing an onboard Digital Motion Processor (DMP), it offloads complex sensor fusion algorithms from the primary microcontroller, reducing system power consumption and latency for real-time orientation and motion tracking applications in space-constrained designs.

Variants in This Sub-Family

While the ICM-20948 is the primary 9-axis solution in this series, variants within the broader ICM family differ mainly by their axis count and integration levels. The ICM-20648 offers similar 6-axis performance without the magnetometer, while the newer ICM-42xxx series introduces higher precision MEMS and lower power envelopes. Package-compatible variants may also offer different DMP firmware capabilities or specialized automotive qualification (A-suffix versions) for ADAS and navigation.
