MPU-6050 in MPU6050 / ICM IMU Family
The MPU-6050, manufactured by InvenSense (now a TDK group company), is a pioneering 6-axis MotionTracking device that integrates a 3-axis gyroscope and a 3-axis accelerometer on a single silicon die. Known for its Digital Motion Processor (DMP), it offloads complex sensor fusion calculations from the primary microcontroller. This component became the industry standard for consumer-grade motion sensing, widely utilized in hobbyist robotics, consumer electronics, and DIY drone flight controllers due to its accessible I2C interface and robust driver support.
Variants in This Sub-Family
While the MPU-6050 is the core variant, the family includes the MPU-6000, which offers a high-speed SPI interface in addition to I2C. Newer ICM-series derivatives serve as modern replacements, offering lower power consumption and improved noise density. Variants primarily differ in their package dimensions, digital interface options (I2C vs SPI), and the inclusion of additional magnetometer axes found in the 9-axis counterparts like the MPU-9250.
