Overview

The SparkFun 12040 is a high-side current monitor breakout board based on the Texas Instruments INA169 IC. It converts a high-side current measurement into a low-side analog voltage signal that can be easily read by a microcontroller ADC. The board supports common-mode voltages up to 75V, making it suitable for a wide range of power monitoring tasks.

Why Choose This Part

This breakout board provides a simplified 5-pin interface and includes an onboard 0.1 ohm sense resistor and 10k ohm output resistor. It features a wide common-mode input range of 0V to 75V, allowing for high-voltage sensing that exceeds the supply voltage of the monitoring microcontroller.

Applications

Battery Charging and Discharge Monitoring
Tracking current flow in and out of battery packs to calculate remaining capacity or state of charge.
Solar Array Monitoring
Measuring the output current of solar panels to optimize positioning or track energy production.
Motor Overcurrent Protection
Providing real-time feedback of motor current draw to detect stalls or mechanical obstructions.
Power Management Systems
General purpose current sensing in DC-DC converters and industrial power supplies.

Getting Started

Connect the load in series with the RS+ and RS- pins and provide a supply voltage between 2.7V and 60V to the VCC pin. The output voltage at the OUT pin is proportional to the current flowing through the shunt resistor and can be sampled using any standard 10-bit or 12-bit analog-to-digital converter.
