Overview

The SparkFun Soil Moisture Sensor is a simple breakout board designed to measure the volumetric water content in soil through resistive sensing. The board features two large, exposed pads that act as probes for the sensor, functioning as a variable resistor where the resistance decreases as the soil moisture increases. It is an ideal entry-level solution for automated gardening and environmental monitoring projects.

Why Choose This Part

The sensor is extremely easy to interface with any microcontroller possessing an Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC). Its simple three-pin header (VCC, GND, SIG) allows for quick integration into breadboarded circuits or custom enclosures without complex communication protocols.

Applications

Automated Irrigation Systems
Triggers a water pump or solenoid valve when soil moisture levels drop below a pre-defined threshold.
Indoor Plant Monitoring
Provides real-time feedback on houseplant health to prevent over-watering or dehydration.
Agricultural Prototyping
Used in small-scale test beds to evaluate sensor placement and data logging strategies for larger farming operations.

Getting Started

Connect the SIG pin to an analog input on an Arduino or ESP32 and power the board with 3.3V or 5V. To prolong sensor life and prevent probe corrosion due to electrolysis, it is recommended to only power the sensor briefly during the measurement cycle rather than continuously.
