Overview

The Pololu 2977 is a high-performance carrier board for the TI DRV8825 bipolar stepper motor driver. It features adjustable current limiting, over-current and over-temperature protection, and six different microstep resolutions ranging from full-step down to 1/32-step. The module operates from 8.2V to 45V and can deliver up to approximately 1.5A per phase without a heat sink.

Why Choose This Part

It offers higher microstepping (1/32-step) compared to the standard A4988, resulting in quieter and smoother motor operation. The 4-layer PCB design improves heat dissipation, allowing the driver to handle higher voltages up to 45V safely.

Applications

Desktop 3D Printers
Driving NEMA 17 or smaller stepper motors for precise X, Y, and Z axis positioning.
CNC Milling Machines
Controlling lead screw movement in small-scale desktop CNC fabrication tools.
Robotic Actuators
Providing high-resolution motion control for articulated robotic arms and grippers.
Automated Camera Sliders
Smooth, low-speed translation for professional cinematography and time-lapse photography.

Getting Started

Connect a 8.2V to 45V power supply to VMOT and GND, and interface the STEP and DIR pins with a microcontroller like an Arduino. Use the on-board potentiometer to set the current limit to match your stepper motor's rated current before operation. Ensure a large decoupling capacitor is placed close to the board's power pins to protect against LC voltage spikes.
