Overview

The 74HC4051D is an 8-channel analog multiplexer/demultiplexer featuring three digital select inputs and an enable input. It is designed to handle both analog and digital signals, allowing for the switching of voltages up to +/-5V when using a dual supply or up to 10V with a single supply. This CMOS device provides low power consumption and high noise immunity for signal routing applications.

Why Choose This Part

It offers high-speed operation with switch times as low as 42ns and a high -3db bandwidth of 180MHz, making it suitable for video or high-frequency switching. The device supports a wide supply range from 2V to 10V and features built-in 'break-before-make' switching to prevent signal overlap.

Applications

Analog Signal Routing
Switching multiple sensor signals into a single ADC input to reduce microcontroller pin count.
Logic Level Translation
Interfacing 5V digital logic with analog signals ranging from -5V to +5V.
Digital Data Multiplexing
Selecting one of eight digital data lines to be routed to a single processor input.
Signal Gating
Using the Enable pin to quickly disconnect all eight channels for signal isolation.

Getting Started

Connect the S0-S2 select pins to your microcontroller's GPIO to choose the active channel. Ensure the E (Enable) pin is pulled low for operation and remember that the VEE pin must be connected to the most negative voltage in the system (GND for single-supply or -5V for dual-supply). Use decoupling capacitors on VCC to minimize noise during high-speed switching.
