Overview

The ADM3485 is a single-driver, single-receiver half-duplex RS-422/RS-485 transceiver designed for 3.0 V to 3.6 V supplies. It supports data rates up to 10 Mbps, has a receiver hysteresis of 50 mV, and is offered in an 8-SOIC package with industrial temperature range (-40 to 85 C). The device is intended for simple differential serial links where a compact, 3.3 V-compatible transceiver is required.

Why Choose This Part

Supports 3.0 V to 3.6 V operation and up to 10 Mbps data rate, making it suitable for modern 3.3 V systems that need higher-speed RS-485 links. The 50 mV receiver hysteresis and industrial temperature range help maintain reliable communication in noisy or harsh environments. Its 8-SOIC package is compact for PCB space-constrained designs and simplifies assembly compared with through-hole parts.

Applications

Modbus/industrial fieldbus links
Connecting PLCs, I/O modules, and sensors over RS-485 multi-drop networks.
Building automation
BACnet and other building control buses requiring robust differential communication.
Point-of-sale and kiosk serial links
Short-run differential links between peripherals and controllers.
Motor controller and drive communications
Half-duplex telemetry and command links in motor control systems.
Sensor networks and embedded telemetry
Low-pin-count differential links between distributed sensors and a host.

Getting Started

Provide a 3.3 V supply within the device range and wire DE and /RE so the driver is enabled only when transmitting (or tie /RE low and control DE for half-duplex). Use standard RS-485 practice: 120 ohm termination at each end of a line and fail-safe biasing resistors to define the idle bus state. For bench bring-up, a USB-to-RS485 adapter or a second transceiver on a development board plus a logic analyzer or oscilloscope will help validate the signal timing and DE/RE control.
