ADM485EAR

ADM485EAR

Analog Devices
Pin- and function-compatible 5 V transceiver option from Analog Devices that is commonly used as an alternative in existing designs.
NRND7,099 in stock

Overview

The ADM485EAR is a 5 V, half-duplex RS-422/RS-485 transceiver in an 8-pin SOIC package. It provides one driver and one receiver with 70 mV receiver hysteresis and supports data rates up to 2.5 Mbps. The device is specified for 4.75 V to 5.25 V supply and industrial temperature operation (-40 to 85 C).

Why Choose This Part

The ADM485EAR is a direct drop-in option for 5 V legacy systems thanks to its standard 8-SOIC pinout and 5 V supply range. Its 70 mV receiver hysteresis and 2.5 Mbps capability make it suitable for noisy environments and higher-speed RS-485/RS-422 links. Wide industrial temperature rating and common SOIC packaging simplify replacement and PCB redesigns.

Applications

Industrial fieldbus nodes
Reliable master/slave communication on long multi-drop RS-485 runs in PLCs, I/O modules, and factory automation.
Building automation and HVAC
Connecting sensors, controllers, and gateways over twisted-pair RS-485 runs in BAS and HVAC networks.
Embedded microcontroller UART to RS-485 interface
Add differential wired comms to 5 V microcontroller boards for robust serial links and multipoint networks.
Motor control and drive networks
Communication between motor controllers and higher-level controllers where noise immunity and long cable runs are required.

Getting Started

No special development board is required - wire the transceiver between your MCU UART and the differential A/B pair, and control the DE/RE direction pins from a GPIO. Follow standard RS-485 practice: place 120 ohm termination at line ends, provide fail-safe biasing or pull resistors as needed, tie signal and chassis grounds appropriately, and add transient protection for harsh environments.
