Overview

The ADUM163N1BRZ is a 6-channel digital isolator based on Analog Devices' iCoupler technology, providing 3000Vrms isolation. It supports high-speed data rates up to 150Mbps with a 3/3 channel configuration, making it ideal for bidirectional communication in space-constrained layouts. The device features a high common-mode transient immunity of 75kV/us to ensure data integrity in electrically noisy environments.

Why Choose This Part

The iCoupler technology eliminates the performance limitations of optocouplers, such as LED aging and high power consumption. It offers tight timing specifications with maximum propagation delays of 13ns and low pulse width distortion. The 16-SOIC package provides six channels in a small footprint, reducing PCB area compared to multiple discrete isolators.

Applications

SPI Bus Isolation
High-speed isolation for Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) buses where clock, data-in, data-out, and select lines require robust galvanic separation.
Industrial Fieldbus
Protecting communication ports in RS-485, CAN, or Ethernet-based industrial networks from ground loops and high-voltage transients.
Multi-Channel Logic Level Shifting
Providing simultaneous signal isolation and level shifting between microcontrollers operating at different supply voltages.

Getting Started

Designers should place 0.1 microfarad bypass capacitors as close as possible to the VDD1 and VDD2 pins to maintain signal integrity. Ensure that the PCB layout maintains the required creepage and clearance distances between the Side 1 and Side 2 ground planes to meet safety certifications. Evaluation can be performed using the Analog Devices EVAL-ADUM16xN boards which provide test points for all channels.
