AS5048A
Overview
The AS5048A is a high-resolution, 14-bit magnetic rotary encoder designed for contactless angle measurement over a full 360-degree range. It utilizes a Hall-effect sensor array to detect the orientation of a simple two-pole magnet, providing 0.0219 degrees per LSB resolution via an SPI interface. The device is specifically engineered to be immune to external magnetic stray fields, ensuring high reliability in electrically noisy environments.
Why Choose This Part
This sensor offers a high 14-bit resolution that allows for extremely smooth motion control and positioning accuracy. Because it is contactless, it eliminates the mechanical failure points associated with traditional potentiometers or optical encoders in harsh environments. The integrated LDO and wide operating temperature range of -40C to +150C make it versatile for both 3.3V and 5V systems in extreme industrial or automotive conditions.
Applications
Getting Started
To evaluate the sensor, start with the AS5048-DB adapter board which breaks out the SPI and PWM pins. Place a diametrically magnetized disk magnet approximately 0.5mm to 3mm above the center of the IC. Use a microcontroller with a standard SPI peripheral to read the 14-bit angle register, ensuring the CSn line is toggled for every 16-bit transfer.
