Overview

The ATECC608B is a high-security cryptographic co-processor that provides hardware-based key storage for asymmetric and symmetric algorithms. It integrates ECDH and ECDSA support for secure boot and key agreement, alongside SHA-256 and AES-128 hardware accelerators. The device connects via I2C and is designed to protect private keys from physical and logical attacks.

Why Choose This Part

The IC features extremely low power consumption, drawing only 3uA in sleep mode and as little as 2mA during I2C wait states. It provides a dedicated internal high-quality NIST SP 800-90A/B/C random number generator and a unique 72-bit serial number. Hardware-based isolation ensures that private keys never leave the device, even during the execution of cryptographic commands.

Applications

IoT Device Authentication
Securing cloud connections to platforms like AWS IoT and Google Cloud IoT by storing unique device certificates and private keys.
Secure Boot
Validating firmware signatures using ECDSA to ensure that only authorized code runs on the host microcontroller.
Ecosystem Control
Authenticating accessories or consumables to prevent counterfeit or unauthorized third-party hardware from being used with a system.
TLS Network Security
Offloading HKDF and PRF operations for TLS 1.2 and 1.3 handshakes to improve performance and security on resource-constrained MCUs.

Getting Started

Start development using the Microchip CryptoAuthentication Library (CryptoAuthLib), which supports various MCU architectures. For hardware evaluation, the Microchip EV24R03A (ATECC608B Trust Development Board) provides a plug-and-play solution for testing secure boot and authentication workflows.
