ATTINY88-PU

MCHPATTINY88-PU

Microchip Technology
AVR AVR® ATtiny Microcontroller IC 8-Bit 12MHz 8KB (4K x 16) FLASH 28-PDIP

Overview

The ATTINY88-PU is a high-performance, low-power 8-bit AVR RISC-based microcontroller in a through-hole 28-pin PDIP package. It features 8KB of ISP flash, 512 bytes of RAM, and 64 bytes of EEPROM, operating at speeds up to 12MHz. This variant is particularly popular for prototyping and educational use due to its high I/O count relative to its memory size and its ease of use on standard breadboards.

Why Choose This Part

The 28-PDIP package allows for rapid breadboarding and easy manual soldering without specialized equipment. It offers a high I/O density for an 8-bit controller, including 24 programmable I/O lines, and features robust peripheral support such as I2C, SPI, and an internal calibrated oscillator.

Applications

Industrial Sensor Interfaces
Utilizing 24 I/O pins to monitor multiple digital and analog inputs in industrial environments.
Legacy System Maintenance
Providing a modern, low-power replacement for older 8-bit controllers in through-hole PCB designs.
Battery-Powered Handhelds
Taking advantage of the 0.1uA power-down mode for extended battery life in portable devices.
Educational Prototyping
Serving as a cost-effective, socketable MCU for teaching embedded C and assembly programming.

Getting Started

Development is supported by Microchip Studio or the MPLAB X IDE using the XC8 compiler. Hardware programming can be performed via the SPI interface using an AVRISP mkII or through the debugWIRE on-chip debug system. For breadboard users, a 0.1uF decoupling capacitor across VCC and GND pins is essential for stable 12MHz operation.
