Overview

The BQ25505RGRR is an ultra-low power energy harvesting management IC designed to extract microwatts to milliwatts from high-impedance sources like solar or thermoelectric generators. It features a high-efficiency boost charger with an integrated Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm and a unique primary cell battery multiplexer for autonomous power path management. With a quiescent current of only 325nA, it enables long-term operation of wireless sensor nodes and wearables using ambient energy storage.

Why Choose This Part

This IC supports a cold-start voltage as low as 600mV and can continue harvesting from inputs down to 100mV once started. It includes programmable overvoltage and undervoltage protection to safely manage Li-ion batteries or super-capacitors, and provides a battery-status signal to warn microcontrollers of impending power loss.

Applications

Solar Powered Wireless Sensors
Extracting energy from small indoor or outdoor photovoltaic cells to power IoT nodes.
Thermoelectric Generator (TEG) Systems
Converting small temperature differentials into electrical energy for industrial monitoring.
Self-Powered Wearables
Managing energy from body heat or movement stored in thin-film batteries or super-capacitors.
Primary Battery Backup Systems
Using the integrated gate drivers to automatically switch between harvested energy and a non-rechargeable backup battery.

Getting Started

Designers can evaluate this part using the BQ25505EVM-218 evaluation module, which allows for easy configuration of MPPT thresholds and output voltage levels via external resistors. Ensure careful PCB layout of the boost inductor and storage capacitors to minimize parasitic losses in the nano-ampere current regime.
