Overview

The BQ27520YZFR-G4 is a microcontroller-side fuel gauge for single-cell Li-Ion battery packs using TI patented Impedance Track technology. It provides highly accurate predictions of battery capacity and state-of-health by modeling battery impedance based on discharge rate, temperature, and cell aging. The device communicates over a 400-kHz I2C interface and includes an integrated 2.5V LDO to simplify the power subsystem.

Why Choose This Part

The Impedance Track technology eliminates the need for a full discharge cycle to learn battery capacity, offering 99 percent accuracy over the life of the battery. It operates with a very low run current of 0.118mA and features multiple power-saving modes, including a 23uA sleep mode and an 8uA shutdown mode. The tiny 15-pin DSBGA package with a 0.5mm pitch is ideal for space-constrained mobile applications.

Applications

Smartphones and Tablets
Provides precise remaining capacity and time-to-empty calculations for portable consumer devices.
Handheld Medical Instruments
Ensures critical medical devices have accurate state-of-health monitoring to prevent unexpected power failure during use.
Portable Industrial Terminals
Utilizes dual battery profiles to accommodate pack swapping and maintain accuracy across different battery units.
Digital Cameras
Tracks battery aging and provides configurable SOC interrupts to manage graceful system shutdowns.

Getting Started

To evaluate this IC, use the BQ27520EVM evaluation module alongside the TI bqStudio software and an EV2400 interface adapter. Designers must configure the Data Flash parameters, including the 10-mOhm sense resistor value and specific chemical ID (ChemID) for the chosen cell. The host controller interacts with the gauge via standard I2C commands to read voltage, current, and state-of-charge data.
