Overview

The BQ27621-G1 is a compact, easy-to-configure microcontroller-side fuel gauge for single-cell Li-Ion batteries. It uses TI proprietary Impedance Track technology to provide highly accurate battery capacity predictions without requiring a sense resistor. The device monitors battery voltage to provide information such as remaining capacity, state-of-charge, and battery health via an I2C interface.

Why Choose This Part

The primary advantage is its sense-resistor-less design, which reduces BOM cost and PCB footprint while eliminating power loss through a shunt. It features ultra-low power consumption with a 9uA standby current and a 0.6uA shutdown mode, making it suitable for always-on battery monitoring. The 9-DSBGA package (1.62mm x 1.58mm) allows for integration into high-density portable designs.

Applications

Wearable Electronics
Ideal for small form-factor devices like smartwatches where board space is too limited for external sense resistors.
Handheld Terminals
Provides accurate remaining run-time data for portable scanners and industrial handheld devices.
Digital Cameras
Monitors Li-Ion packs to ensure reliable operation and prevent data loss during low-battery conditions.
Smartphones and Tablets
Serves as a secondary or primary fuel gauge to manage power profiles and battery longevity.

Getting Started

Engineers should start by evaluating the BQ27621EVM-G1 evaluation module and using the Battery Management Studio (bqStudio) software. Integration requires connecting the fuel gauge to the system I2C bus and configuring the battery chemistry and capacity parameters via firmware. No complex learning cycle is required for this specific device to provide accurate state-of-charge data.
