Overview

The CP2105 is a highly integrated USB-to-Dual-UART Bridge Controller that provides a simple solution for updating RS-232 designs to USB using a minimum of components and PCB space. It includes a USB 2.0 full-speed function controller, USB transceiver, oscillator, and two serial data buses (UART) with integrated One-Time Programmable ROM in a compact 4x4 mm QFN24 package. The device operates with a supply current of 17mA and supports a wide supply voltage range from 3.0V to 3.6V.

Why Choose This Part

The CP2105 eliminates the need for an external crystal and voltage regulator, significantly reducing the Bill of Materials (BOM) and board area. Its 5V-tolerant I/O pins and integrated 296-byte OTP ROM for custom serial strings and IDs make it highly versatile for branded commercial products. Additionally, the inclusion of 5 GPIO pins and support for both hardware (RTS/CTS) and software (X-On/X-Off) flow control provides advanced traffic management for complex serial protocols.

Applications

Legacy RS-232 to USB Upgrades
Replacing bulky serial ports with a single USB connector while maintaining dual independent serial channels for system control and debugging.
Industrial Control Systems
Utilizing the integrated RS-485 mode and hardware flow control for robust communication in noisy factory environments.
Embedded System Debugging
Providing simultaneous access to both a command-line interface (CLI) and a raw data stream or bootloader via a single USB connection.
USB Dongles and Adapters
Designing small-form-factor dual-port serial converters that require no external crystal or EEPROM.

Getting Started

To begin development, engineers can use the CP2105EK evaluation kit, which provides a complete hardware platform for testing both UART interfaces. Silicon Labs provides Virtual COM Port (VCP) drivers for Windows, macOS, and Linux, which allow the device to appear as two standard COM ports to the host operating system. The XpressConfigurator utility within Simplicity Studio can be used to program the internal OTP ROM for custom VID/PID and string descriptors.
