DS3231SN
Overview
The DS3231SN is an extremely accurate, I2C-integrated Real-Time Clock (RTC) with a temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) and crystal. It maintains high precision by compensating for crystal frequency changes caused by temperature fluctuations using an internal sensor and aging trim register. This device ensures continuous timekeeping with a battery-backup input and includes features like dual alarms and a programmable square-wave output.
Why Choose This Part
The integrated crystal simplifies PCB layout and eliminates the need for external tuning capacitors while providing superior accuracy over discrete solutions. It supports a wide operating voltage from 2.3V to 5.5V and consumes only 3.5uA in battery-backed sleep mode, significantly extending backup battery life. The addition of a pushbutton reset input and debouncing circuitry provides extra system-level integration for microcontroller monitoring.
Applications
Getting Started
Communicate with the device over a standard I2C bus at address 0xD0. For prototyping, connect a 3V lithium cell to the V_BAT pin and pull-up resistors to the SDA and SCL lines. Designers should monitor the OSF (Oscillator Stop Flag) bit to ensure the clock integrity hasn't been compromised by a power loss.
