Overview

The EMC1701-2-AIZL-TR is a high-side current and power monitor that provides bi-directional current sensing and automatic power calculation over an SMBus 2.0 interface. It integrates an internal diode temperature sensor and dedicated ALERT/THERM outputs for comprehensive system health monitoring in a compact 10-pin MSOP package.

Why Choose This Part

This IC simplifies system design by offloading power calculations from the host MCU and provides a wide 3V to 24V input range suitable for multi-cell battery stacks. It features a high 1 percent measurement accuracy and includes a peak current detector to identify transient spikes that standard averaging might miss.

Applications

USB Port Power Control
Monitoring current draw and managing power delivery for USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports with emulation support.
Battery Charging Systems
Tracking charge and discharge cycles in portable electronics with bi-directional current measurement.
Notebook and Tablet Power Rail Monitoring
Real-time power calculation and thermal monitoring for critical CPU or GPU power rails.

Getting Started

Evaluation can be performed using Microchip generic SMBus prototyping tools or by connecting the 10-pin MSOP to an MCU via the 5V-tolerant I2C/SMBus pins. Configure the sense resistor value in the firmware to scale the current and power registers according to the application's expected range.

Also Consider

INA219 TITexas Instruments - A widely-used alternative for high-side current sensing with I2C that supports up to 26V, though it lacks the integrated temperature sensing of the EMC1701.
