Overview

The ESP-WROOM-02U-N4 is a compact 2.4GHz Wi-Fi module based on the ESP8266EX SoC, featuring an integrated 4MB flash and a U.FL connector for external antenna attachment. It supports 802.11b/g/n protocols and provides a cost-effective solution for adding wireless connectivity to space-constrained designs. The module is designed for reliable performance in industrial environments with a wide operating voltage range of 2.7V to 3.6V.

Why Choose This Part

This module offers a high output power of 20.5dBm and excellent sensitivity of -98dBm for robust link budgets. Its small 18-SMD form factor and U.FL connector make it ideal for applications where a PCB trace antenna would be shielded by an enclosure. The deep-sleep current of 20uA enables efficient operation in battery-powered IoT devices.

Applications

Smart Home Appliances
Integrating Wi-Fi connectivity into white goods, thermostats, and lighting controllers for remote monitoring and automation.
Industrial Wireless Control
Utilizing the U.FL connector to mount an external antenna outside of metal enclosures for reliable industrial communication.
Sensor Data Aggregators
Serving as a low-power gateway to collect data from local peripherals via I2C or UART and upload it to cloud services.

Getting Started

Developers can use the Espressif IoT Development Framework (ESP8266 RTOS SDK) or the Arduino Core for ESP8266 for firmware development. Hardware prototyping is best supported by using the ESP8266-DevKitC or similar breakout boards that provide USB-to-UART bridging and 3.3V regulation. Use the Esptool.py utility for flashing the 4MB onboard memory via the UART interface.
