Overview

The FT240XS-R is a USB to parallel FIFO bridge chip that simplifies the implementation of USB 2.0 Full Speed connectivity in embedded designs. It handles the entire USB protocol on-chip, eliminating the need for complex USB firmware development. With integrated clock generation and 2048 bytes of MTP memory, it provides a compact solution for bidirectional data transfer between a host and an external MCU or FPGA.

Why Choose This Part

The device features 512-byte transmit and receive buffers with buffer smoothing technology to maintain high throughput. It integrates all necessary clocking and MTP memory for descriptors into a small 24-SSOP package, reducing BOM count by eliminating external crystals and EEPROMs. FTDI's royalty-free VCP and D2XX drivers further accelerate time-to-market by removing the requirement for custom USB driver development.

Applications

MCU-to-USB Bridging
Adding USB connectivity to legacy microcontroller designs using a simple parallel FIFO interface.
FPGA Data Offloading
Providing a high-throughput pipe for streaming data from an FPGA to a PC for analysis or storage.
USB Industrial Controllers
Integrating into industrial equipment for configuration, monitoring, and data logging via a standard USB port.
USB Battery Charging Detection
Detecting the presence of a USB charger to enable higher current battery charging in portable devices.

Getting Started

To evaluate the FT240XS, engineers often use the UMFT240XA development module which breaks out the 24-pin SSOP interface. Drivers are available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux via the FTDI website. Configuration of the internal MTP memory for custom descriptors can be performed using the free FT_PROG utility over the USB interface.
