Overview

The ICL3232CVZ is a dual-channel RS-232 transceiver designed for high-speed serial communication in systems powered by 3.0V to 5.5V supplies. It features integrated charge pumps that require only four small 0.1uF external capacitors to generate the necessary RS-232 voltage levels, making it ideal for space-constrained designs. With a minimum data rate of 250kbps and 15kV HBM ESD protection, it provides a robust interface for legacy serial protocols in modern embedded environments.

Why Choose This Part

This transceiver offers a wide 3.0V to 5.5V operating range, ensuring compatibility with both 3.3V and 5V logic families without needing level shifters. Its 15kV ESD protection and latch-up free design enhance system reliability in harsh electrical environments. Additionally, the high 300mV receiver hysteresis provides superior noise immunity for long cable runs.

Applications

Embedded System Console Ports
Providing a reliable RS-232 interface for debug consoles and terminal access in industrial computers and networking hardware.
Handheld Instrumentation
Utilizing the low 0.3mA supply current and small TSSOP footprint for portable diagnostic tools that require serial connectivity.
Legacy Peripheral Interfacing
Connecting 3.3V microcontrollers to older RS-232 peripherals like barcode scanners, PLCs, and medical monitors.

Getting Started

To implement the ICL3232CVZ, place four 0.1uF ceramic capacitors close to the IC pins as specified for the internal charge pump. Ensure the VCC pin is decoupled with a 0.1uF capacitor to ground. For prototyping, this part can be used with TSSOP-to-DIP breakout boards to interface with standard MCU UART pins and DB9 connectors.
