Overview

The ICL7660CPA is a monolithic CMOS switched-capacitor voltage converter that performs supply voltage conversions from positive to negative. It is widely used to generate a negative voltage rail in single-supply systems with minimal external components, requiring only two non-critical capacitors for operation.

Why Choose This Part

This device offers high efficiency with a typical power conversion rate of 98% and operates over a wide input voltage range of 1.5V to 10.5V. Its low supply current of 80-175 microamps and the simple 8-DIP package make it an ideal, low-cost solution for adding negative rails to analog circuits without complex switching regulators.

Applications

Negative Voltage Generation
Converting a +5V logic supply into a -5V rail to power the negative supply pins of operational amplifiers and data converters.
Voltage Doubling
Configuring the charge pump to provide a positive output voltage nearly double the input source voltage.
RS-232 Power Supplies
Providing the necessary bipolar voltage levels for low-power serial communication interfaces from a single 5V input.

Getting Started

To use the ICL7660CPA as a standard inverter, connect the input voltage to Pin 8 and ground to Pin 3, then place 10uF electrolytic capacitors between Pins 2 and 4, and Pin 5 and ground. For input voltages above 6.5V, connect the LV pin (Pin 6) to ground to prevent device latch-up, ensuring the output remains stable at 10kHz switching frequency.
