Overview

The L7915CV is a negative fixed-output linear voltage regulator designed to provide a stable -15V supply at currents up to 1.5A. It is housed in a standard TO-220 package and includes internal thermal overload protection, short-circuit protection, and output transition safe area (SOA) protection. This regulator is commonly used in split-rail power supply designs where a clean negative voltage rail is required alongside a positive counterpart.

Why Choose This Part

The device offers a high Power Supply Rejection Ratio (PSRR) of 60dB at 120kHz, making it effective at filtering input ripple in rectified AC supplies. Its built-in protection features, including thermal shutdown and current limiting, make the regulator nearly indestructible under standard operating conditions. The TO-220 package allows for easy heatsink attachment to manage thermal dissipation when operating with high input-to-output voltage differentials.

Applications

Dual Rail Power Supplies
Used in conjunction with L78xx series positive regulators to provide balanced +/-15V rails for operational amplifiers and analog circuitry.
Audio Equipment
Provides low-noise negative bias for high-fidelity preamplifiers and signal processing stages.
Industrial Control Systems
Supplies stable negative reference voltages for instrumentation and data acquisition systems requiring bipolar signal ranges.

Getting Started

To ensure stability, connect a 2.2uF tantalum or 25uF aluminum electrolytic capacitor at the input and a 1uF capacitor at the output. Ensure the input voltage is maintained between -17.5V and -35V for proper regulation. Use a heatsink if the power dissipation (Input Voltage minus Output Voltage times Load Current) exceeds the thermal rating of the TO-220 package in your ambient environment.
