Overview

The LAN7800-I/VSX is a high-performance USB 3.1 Gen 1 to 10/100/1000 Ethernet bridge with an integrated Gigabit PHY. It provides a single-chip solution for adding high-speed networking to embedded systems via a SuperSpeed USB interface, supporting industrial temperature ranges from -40C to 85C.

Why Choose This Part

The device features extensive hardware offload engines for IPv4/IPv6 checksums and 9 KB jumbo frame support to reduce host CPU overhead. It includes specialized power management like NetDetach, which automatically manages USB state based on Ethernet cable connectivity, and supports Energy Efficient Ethernet (IEEE 802.3az).

Applications

Industrial PC Expansion
Adding Gigabit Ethernet ports to industrial controllers and fanless PCs via internal USB headers.
Embedded Single Board Computers
Providing high-bandwidth networking for Raspberry Pi or other SBCs that require true Gigabit throughput over USB 3.0.
Ethernet-to-USB Dongles
Developing rugged, high-performance networking adapters for field service applications in harsh environments.
Automated Test Equipment
Enabling fast data offload from modular instrumentation backplanes to a host computer.

Getting Started

Designers can evaluate the chip using the EVB-LAN7800-LC evaluation board. Hardware configuration is handled through an internal 1 KB OTP memory or an external 512-byte EEPROM, and Microchip provides drivers for major operating systems including Windows, Linux, and macOS.
