MCHPLAN8720A-CP
Overview
The LAN8720A-CP is a low-power 10/100 Ethernet physical layer transceiver (PHY) designed for space-constrained applications. It supports a Reduced Media Independent Interface (RMII) to communicate with a MAC, effectively reducing the pin count required for network connectivity. This transceiver features HP Auto-MDIX support for automatic cable detection and is capable of operating from a single 1.6V to 3.6V supply.
Why Choose This Part
The LAN8720A-CP significantly reduces BOM costs and PCB area by utilizing the RMII interface and a small 4x4mm VFQFN package. It offers extremely low power consumption, drawing only 45mA typical during 100BASE-TX traffic and as little as 1.8mA in standby mode. Integrated HP Auto-MDIX eliminates the need for crossover cables, simplifying end-user connectivity.

Getting Started
Engineers can evaluate this PHY using the LAN8720A Evaluation Board (EVB8720) or by connecting it to a microcontroller with an RMII-compliant MAC, such as an STM32 or ESP32. Design requires a 25MHz crystal or external clock source, and care should be taken to ensure the RMII trace lengths are matched for signal integrity. Software implementation typically involves standard LWIP or FreeRTOS-TCP stacks.
