Overview

The LAN8804 is a high-performance quad-port Gigabit Ethernet transceiver designed for dense networking applications. It features a QSGMII interface to reduce pin count and supports Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) frame preemption for deterministic communication. This 128-pin TQFP device integrates advanced cable diagnostics and multiple power-down modes to optimize energy efficiency in multi-port designs.

Why Choose This Part

The quad-port integration significantly reduces PCB footprint compared to four discrete PHYs, while the QSGMII interface minimizes signal routing complexity to the MAC. It provides robust diagnostic capabilities through LinkMD TDR-based cable testing and a built-in die temperature monitor for system health tracking.

Applications

Industrial Ethernet Switches
Providing four 10/100/1000 Mbps ports for managed or unmanaged industrial switches requiring TSN support.
Factory Automation Controllers
Enabling high-bandwidth, low-latency communication between PLCs and remote I/O modules.
Network Video Recorders
Interfacing multiple IP camera streams to a central processor via a compact QSGMII link.

Getting Started

Designers should leverage the LAN8804 evaluation board (EVB-LAN8804) to validate port performance and QSGMII signal integrity. Configuration is managed via the standard MDIO/MDC interface, and Microchip provides Linux drivers and a software development kit to accelerate driver integration.
