Overview

The LAN9253 is a 2-port EtherCAT device controller with integrated Ethernet PHYs and a flexible host interface. It supports MII, SPI, and I2C/SQI communication, making it a versatile bridge between a local microcontroller and a high-speed industrial Ethernet network. This controller is designed for real-time synchronization in harsh environments, featuring eight SyncManagers and eight Fieldbus Memory Management Units (FMMUs).

Why Choose This Part

The LAN9253 integrates dual 100BASE-TX PHYs with HP Auto-MDIX and a 1.2V regulator, significantly reducing the external Bill of Materials. It supports low-power modes down to 15.43mA and features cable diagnostics to identify wiring faults in the field. The inclusion of eight FMMUs provides more granular memory mapping than previous generations, enhancing compatibility with complex EtherCAT masters.

Applications

Industrial Motion Control
Used in multi-axis motor controllers where precise synchronization and low latency are required via the EtherCAT protocol.
Robotic Actuators
Ideal for integrated joint controllers that need a small footprint QFN package and high-speed feedback loops.
Distributed IO Modules
Enables remote digital and analog sensor data collection over standard 100 Base-TX Ethernet infrastructure.
Safety Systems
Implements EtherCAT communication for safety-rated industrial equipment requiring predictable timing and robust error checking.

Getting Started

Start development using the Microchip EVB-LAN9253-MII evaluation board to test the MII interface with an external MCU. Software integration is supported through the EtherCAT Slave Stack Code (SSC) tool from Beckhoff, which can be configured to target the LAN9253 hardware registers. Ensure proper thermal dissipation for the 64-QFN exposed pad and utilize the built-in 25MHz clock output to simplify system timing.
