Overview

The LM1085IS-5.0/NOPB is a low-dropout (LDO) positive voltage regulator designed to provide 5V at up to 3A of output current. It is part of the LM1085 series which features a dropout voltage of 1.5V at maximum current, making it suitable for high-current applications requiring a stable 5V rail. This variant is housed in a surface-mount TO-263 package, often referred to as DDPAK or D2PAK.

Why Choose This Part

The device offers robust 3A current delivery with internal current limiting and thermal protection to prevent failure during overload conditions. It maintains tight output regulation with a maximum output voltage tolerance of +/- 1 percent and provides 68dB of PSRR at 120Hz for noise rejection.

Applications

High-Efficiency Linear Regulators
Providing a stable 5V rail from supplies up to 20V in systems where low dropout is critical for thermal management.
Battery Charger Circuits
Utilizing its 3A current capability to drive charging stages for multi-cell battery packs.
Post-Regulators for Switching Supplies
Reducing ripple and noise from a primary switching regulator to provide clean 5V power for sensitive digital logic.
Constant Current Regulators
Configuring the device with an external resistor to provide a high-current constant source for specialized loads.

Getting Started

When designing the PCB layout for the TO-263 package, ensure the large metal tab is soldered to a significant copper area for heat dissipation. Use a minimum of 10uF tantalum or electrolytic capacitors on the output to ensure loop stability across the full -40C to 125C operating temperature range.
