Overview

The LM2576HVS-5.0/NOPB is a monolithic step-down switching regulator capable of driving a 3A load with excellent line and load regulation. This high-voltage version (HV) supports input voltages up to 60V, providing a fixed 5V output while significantly reducing the size of the heat sink compared to linear regulators. It operates at a fixed switching frequency of 52kHz and includes internal frequency compensation and a fixed-frequency oscillator.

Why Choose This Part

The primary advantage is the 60V maximum input voltage rating, which provides substantial headroom for high-voltage transients. Its 3A output capability and internal thermal shutdown/current limit protections simplify the design of robust power stages. By operating at 52kHz, it allows for the use of standard inductors while maintaining a simpler PCB layout than higher-frequency converters.

Applications

High Voltage Step-Down
Efficiently converting unregulated DC inputs up to 60V down to a stable 5V rail for logic circuits.
On-Card Switching Regulators
Providing localized power conversion on distributed power systems to eliminate voltage drops associated with long traces.
Industrial Power Supplies
Suitable for 24V or 48V industrial bus systems requiring a robust 5V supply for sensors and controllers.

Getting Started

To implement this regulator, select a power inductor (typically 100uH to 150uH) and low-ESR electrolytic capacitors as recommended in the datasheet's fixed-output design procedure. Ensure the TO-263 package is soldered to a large copper area on the PCB for optimal thermal dissipation, as the tab is electrically connected to ground. Use the ON/OFF pin (Pin 5) to keep the device in a low-power standby mode with typically only 50uA current draw when the system is inactive.
