Overview

The LM2596S-3.3/NOPB is a monolithic step-down switching regulator capable of driving a 3A load with excellent line and load regulation. It operates at a fixed 150kHz frequency and provides a fixed 3.3V output from an input voltage range of 4.5V up to 40V. This buck converter is designed to minimize the count of external components, requiring only four to five standard parts to complete a power supply circuit.

Why Choose This Part

The device features internal frequency compensation and a fixed-frequency oscillator, which simplifies EMI filter design and reduces the complexity of external circuitry. It includes robust protection features such as thermal shutdown and current limiting, while also offering a low-power standby mode with a typical 80uA standby current.

Applications

High-Efficiency Step-Down Supply
Used as a primary regulator for converting 12V or 24V industrial rails down to 3.3V for logic circuits with reduced heat dissipation compared to linear regulators.
Grid Infrastructure
Providing stable local power rails in smart meters and utility monitoring equipment where reliability over a -40C to 125C range is required.
On-Card Switching Regulators
Ideal for point-of-load regulation in systems with high input-to-output voltage differentials where 3A current capability is needed.

Getting Started

Designers can implement the circuit using standard, readily available inductors from manufacturers like Pulse or Coilcraft. Ensure the TO-263 package is soldered to a sufficient copper plane on the PCB for thermal management, as the tab serves as the primary heat sink. Reference the datasheet for layout guidelines to minimize noise associated with the 150kHz switching frequency.
