Overview

The LM2596S-ADJ-EV is a monolithic step-down (buck) switching regulator capable of driving a 3A load with excellent line and load regulation. Operating at a fixed switching frequency of 150kHz, it allows for smaller filter components compared to lower frequency regulators. This adjustable version provides an output voltage range starting from 1.2V and supports an input voltage up to 40V.

Why Choose This Part

The device significantly reduces the number of external components required to build a switching power supply, simplifying PCB design. It includes integrated safety features such as thermal shutdown and cycle-by-cycle current limit protection. The TO-263 surface mount package provides effective heat dissipation for high-current applications up to 3A.

Applications

High-Efficiency Step-Down Regulation
Ideal for converting 12V or 24V industrial rails down to 3.3V or 5V logic levels with high efficiency.
Battery Charging Circuits
Utilized in simple chargers where a constant voltage step-down from a higher voltage DC source is required.
Pre-Regulator for Linear Regulators
Acts as an efficient first stage to drop high input voltages before a final low-noise linear regulation stage.
On-Card Switching Regulators
Used directly on PCBs to provide localized power for digital and analog subsystems from a single unregulated supply.

Getting Started

To implement this regulator, select an inductor rated for at least 3A and low-ESR capacitors to minimize output ripple. Ensure the feedback resistor network is calculated for your target output voltage according to the 1.2V reference. Use a wide copper area for the TO-263 tab to manage thermal loads at high current outputs.
