Overview

The LM317AT/NOPB is an adjustable three-terminal positive voltage regulator capable of supplying more than 1.5A over an output voltage range of 1.25V to 37V. It features internal current limiting, thermal shutdown, and safe area compensation, making it exceptionally rugged for various power supply designs. This TO-220 packaged device requires only two external resistors to set the output voltage.

Why Choose This Part

This regulator provides excellent load and line regulation with a high power supply rejection ratio of 80dB at 120Hz. Its robust protection suite includes short-circuit protection and a current limit that remains constant with temperature. The 1 percent output voltage accuracy and wide operating temperature range of -40C to 125C ensure reliability in demanding thermal environments.

Applications

Adjustable Bench Power Supplies
Used as the primary regulation stage for variable DC outputs in laboratory environments.
Local On-Card Regulation
Eliminates the distribution problems associated with single-point regulation by providing stable power locally on a PCB.
Programmable Output Regulation
By connecting a fixed resistor between the adjustment pin and output, it can also be configured as a precision current regulator.
Battery Chargers
Suitable for charging circuits where specific voltage and current limits must be maintained.

Getting Started

To implement this regulator, connect a resistor (typically 240 ohms) between the Output and Adjustment pins, and a second resistor from the Adjustment pin to ground to set the output voltage. Use a 0.1uF disc capacitor on the input if the device is far from the filter capacitors and a 1uF tantalum capacitor on the output to improve transient response. Ensure adequate heatsinking for the TO-220 package when dissipating high power levels at 1.5A.
