Overview

The LM393DT is a dual independent precision voltage comparator designed to operate from a single power supply over a wide range of voltages from 2V up to 36V. It features an open-collector output stage that allows for easy level shifting and wire-ORing of multiple outputs. This general-purpose component is optimized for low power consumption, drawing only 0.45mA per comparator regardless of the supply voltage.

Why Choose This Part

The LM393DT offers excellent versatility with a common-mode input voltage range that includes ground even when operated from a single supply. Its open-collector architecture simplifies the design of multi-channel logic gates and allows the output to be pulled up to voltages higher than the Vcc of the IC. The device is also extremely efficient, consuming only 1mW per comparator at 5V.

Applications

Zero-Crossing Detectors
Utilizing high sensitivity to detect when an AC signal passes through the ground reference for timing applications.
Level Shifting
Interfacing between different logic families (TTL, DTL, CMOS) using the open-collector output and external pull-up resistors.
Limit Comparators
Monitoring sensor voltages against a reference to trigger alarms or system shutdowns when thresholds are exceeded.
Battery Status Monitors
Providing low-current voltage monitoring in battery-powered devices to signal low-battery conditions.

Getting Started

Prototyping can be done on a standard breadboard using the 8-SOIC package with a suitable SOIC-to-DIP adapter. Ensure a pull-up resistor is connected from the output pin to the desired logic voltage level, as the open-collector output cannot drive high on its own. Decouple the Vcc pin with a 0.1uF ceramic capacitor placed as close to the IC as possible to minimize noise sensitivity.
