Overview

The LM7805CT/NOPB is a classic three-terminal positive linear voltage regulator that provides a fixed 5V output. It is capable of delivering over 1.5A of output current and features internal thermal overload and short-circuit protection. This regulator is a staple in power management due to its simplicity, requiring no external components for stability.

Why Choose This Part

This regulator features comprehensive protection including internal thermal overload, short-circuit, and safe-area compensation. With an 80dB PSRR at 120Hz, it is highly effective at rejecting input ripple, and its TO-220 package allows for easy heat sinking in high-power applications.

Applications

Industrial Power Supplies
Provides a stable 5V rail for logic circuits and controllers in industrial environments.
SMPS Post Regulation
Used after a switching regulator to reduce ripple and provide a clean, low-noise linear output.
HVAC Systems
Regulates control board power in heating and cooling systems where reliability is critical.
Test and Measurement Equipment
Supplies precise, low-noise power to sensitive analog and digital instrumentation.

Getting Started

When designing with the LM7805CT, ensure the input voltage stays between 7.5V and 20V for optimal regulation, although it can handle up to 35V. While the device is stable without them, adding a 0.33uF ceramic capacitor on the input and a 0.1uF capacitor on the output is recommended to improve transient response and bypass lead inductance. For high current loads, calculate the thermal dissipation to determine if a heat sink is necessary for the TO-220 package.
