Overview

The LMD18200T/NOPB is a fully integrated 3A H-Bridge motor driver designed for motion control applications. It combines Bi-CMOS control circuitry with DMOS power switches on a single monolithic chip, supporting load voltages from 12V to 55V. The device is specifically engineered to drive brushed DC or bipolar stepper motors while providing integrated thermal warning and current sensing outputs.

Why Choose This Part

The DMOS output stage provides high efficiency with low Rds(on) and eliminates the need for external commutating diodes. It features a dedicated current sensing output and a thermal flag pin, allowing the host controller to monitor system health in real-time. The TO-220-11 package facilitates easy heat sinking for continuous 3A operation across a wide 12V to 55V range.

Applications

Brushed DC Motor Drive
Provides bidirectional control for medium-power DC motors in industrial and consumer platforms.
Bipolar Stepper Motor Control
Utilized in pairs to drive the phases of bipolar stepper motors for precise positioning tasks.
Industrial Robotics
Acts as the power stage for robotic actuators requiring high-voltage overhead and robust protection.
Servo Multi-Loop Control
Integrates into closed-loop systems using its current sense output to monitor torque and motor load.

Getting Started

Designers should provide adequate heat sinking for the TO-220 package and place a high-quality bypass capacitor close to the Vcc pin to handle inductive spikes. The device uses a parallel interface where PWM signals control speed and high/low logic levels control direction and braking. Evaluation can be performed using a breadboard with the staggered lead version or by integrating it into a custom PCB with a large copper pour for the thermal tab.
