Overview

The LMV393IDGKR is a dual-channel general-purpose voltage comparator from Texas Instruments featuring open-collector outputs. It is designed for low-voltage operation between 2.7V and 5.5V, making it suitable for battery-powered systems and portable electronics. With a quiescent current of only 50 microamps at 2.7V for both channels, it provides an energy-efficient solution for signal monitoring and level detection.

Why Choose This Part

This comparator offers a significant reduction in power consumption compared to the legacy LM393, while operating at lower supply voltages. The space-saving 8-VSSOP package helps reduce PCB footprint in dense designs like vacuum robots. Its open-collector output provides flexibility in driving various loads up to 84mA at 5V.

Applications

Battery Voltage Monitoring
Used in cordless power tools and portable devices to detect low-battery conditions by comparing cell voltage against a reference.
Level Translation
The open-collector output allows for interfacing between different logic voltage levels by using an external pull-up resistor.
Overcurrent Detection
Integrated into server power supply units (PSUs) and motor drives to trigger protection circuits when current-sense voltages exceed set thresholds.
Zero-Crossing Detection
Utilized in AC line monitoring to identify when a waveform crosses the zero-voltage point for synchronization.

Getting Started

To evaluate this part, use a standard 8-pin VSSOP breakout board for breadboarding or prototype testing. Ensure a pull-up resistor is connected to the output pin, as the open-collector architecture cannot drive high without one. Decouple the supply pin with a 0.1uF ceramic capacitor placed as close to the IC as possible to minimize switching noise.
