Overview

The LNK306PN is a high-performance offline switcher IC from the LinkSwitch-TN family, specifically designed to replace linear and capacitor-fed (cap dropper) non-isolated power supplies. It integrates a 700V power MOSFET, oscillator, and a simple ON/OFF control scheme onto a single monolithic IC. By operating at a 66kHz switching frequency with integrated frequency jittering, it simplifies EMI filter design while providing high efficiency in buck, buck-boost, and flyback topologies.

Why Choose This Part

The device features a 700V breakdown voltage for excellent surge robustness and uses an ON/OFF control method that maintains high efficiency even at light loads. It includes comprehensive safety features such as thermal shutdown, cycle-by-cycle current limiting, and auto-restart protection against short circuits and open loops. The 8-PDIP-B package provides a simple through-hole solution that eliminates the need for a transformer in many buck converter configurations.

Applications

Appliances and White Goods
Ideal for timers, light controllers, and display power supplies in washers, dryers, and ovens.
Industrial Controls
Provides efficient non-isolated power for sensors, relays, and small motor controllers from high-voltage AC inputs.
LED Lighting Drivers
Used in non-isolated constant current or constant voltage LED drivers where small footprint is required.
Smart Utility Meters
Powers the internal electronics of electricity meters with high reliability and low standby power consumption.

Getting Started

To design with the LNK306PN, use the PI Expert design software from Power Integrations to calculate inductor values and feedback resistor networks. Ensure the Source pins are connected to a large copper area to act as a heat sink, as the device is thermally protected but requires proper PCB cooling for maximum output current. Review the RDR-91 reference design for a practical example of a non-isolated 12V, 120mA buck converter.
